Cebu FC moved up to the top of the 2022 Copa Paulino Alcantara following a 1-1 draw with United City FC (UCFC) on May 8, at the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.
Argentinean midfielder Ricki Sendra gave UCFC the early lead with a goal in the sixth minute. Sendra scored from point blank range, hitting the rebound from a goal attempt by Curt Dizon.
Former Cesafi (Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc.) MVP Steven Patalinghug came into the pitch in the 68th minute for Robert Corsame. Just two minutes later, Patalinghug hit the back of the net after connecting with a corner kick.
“Team City United was the most experienced team we’ve gone up against so far, more experienced and more settled team, that’s why we really prepare for this game. We explained to the players the game plan in preparation for this game. I think it was a good game, but after watching the game, we should have been won,” said Cebu FC head coach Mehmet Kakil.
On the other hand, Maharlika Manila FC settled for a 1-1 draw with Stallion Laguna FC.
Stallion was up ahead 1-0 after a header by Abou Sy in the 47th minute.
Maharlika got lucky later in the match as Stallion made a huge blunder. Stallion goalkeeper Hayeson Pepito cleared the ball, which bounced off Brazilian defender Gabriel Silva and into the goal in the 66th minute for an own goal.
Cebu FC moves up to first place with 13 points and is just up ahead on goal difference over defending champion Kaya FC-Iloilo. UCFC remained at third place with nine points, while Azkals Development Team is steady at fourth with seven points. Maharlika is fifth with four, Stallion is sixth with three points and Mendiola FC 1991 is at the bottom with two points.
Cebu FC’s last match is against defending champion Kaya FC-Iloilo. Cebu FC just needs at least a draw to clinch the top seed.
